Nomadic monasticism – “the how”
Nomasticism is about finding ways to apply some of the most valuable aspects of the monastic life – commitment, prayer, community and the balance of our earthly and spiritual lives – in the fast-paced and highly mobile worlds that most of us live in today.
It’s about finding a way to be a dispersed, transient community who can remain committed to each other and a way of living, with a hope to change and love our neighbours, our world, and ourselves.
It isn’t a set of rules, but is a general principle which we encourage each member to respond to and share their journeys with each other.
We’ahabta (you shall love) – “the what”
…God:
- We hold Christ as the basis of our understanding and the source of our inspiration.
- We daily seek God through prayer, reflection, study and contemplation to change our hearts, and show us our opportunities to love and be aware of our impacts on others.
- We commit ourselves to the body of Christ in its many forms.
…others:
- We commit ourselves to acting lovingly to all our neighbours in whatever big or small ways we might find.
- We confess our lack of love, our failings to love, and ask God’s forgiveness, refusing to allow today’s failings to reduce our ability to love tomorrow.
- We hold a special commitment to love in regards to the poor, vulnerable or exploited.
- As part of our love for our neighbour, we commit ourselves to seeking to care for our planet, as our neighbour’s home and source of life.
- Live a considerate life – We consider our impacts of all that we do on our world and our neighbours.
- We commit ourselves to remaining in community, in one or many of its many, varied forms, and to sharing our journeys together, and in doing so bring encouragement to the community and invite others to join us with their own journeys.
- We believe that the only way to fully enable the Kingdom of God on earth is through the individual changing of lives into those that love God and love others. So one-by-one, day-by-day, we must change ourselves, and allow ourselves to be changed by God – and encourage others to do the same through showing them love and the source of that love.
